SCAFFOLDING IN CLIL PRIMARY
Scaffolding activity
- Introduce the activity into a lesson you are
teaching.
- Reflect in 3 or 4 sentences about
the scaffolding process you have used
- Value the results with the
students, the probability of using scaffolding and the resources from the
course to facilitate more dynamic activities in the future.
The
unit we are going to work with is “Plants”
(Natural Sciences, Year 2)
We are going to introduce the unit by
visual aids. We are going to divide the class into 5 groups of 5 children each.
We will give out different pictures and graphic organizers (in a puzzle they
have to put in order first): “The parts
of a plant”, “what do plants need to grow”, “the functions of each part”, “parts
of a tree” and “parts of a flower”.
Looking at the pictures they have to discuss
what information do they have on the pictures and try to create two or three
sentences to explain the rest of the class what the pictures are about.
The results with the students were
really good; while the children were doing the puzzle and talking about the
pictures I walked around the class and I could check how most of them were
taking part on the activity. Some were very good at putting the pieces in order
quickly. And most of them were paying attention to the others when they were
explaining what they saw in the picture.
Finally, all the groups explained to the
class what they could see in the pictures. They did a great effort, talking in
English all the time and helping their classmates when they had some problems
to finish a sentence or to find a word.
I have used more scaffolding activities
in other areas and I´m sure I will continue introducing more dynamic activities
in the future, because the results up to now are being very good. And also,
they like the activities because it´s something new for them.
